Hi, Everyone!
I'll start with a couple of small gripes, and then move on to the happy
stuff. First, while I finally seem to be getting over the last stages of my
sinus infection, I still have some leftover chest congestion and coughing
that are somewhat annoying. Bearable, but annoying, and I just generally
feel super-tired most of the time, though there's been some improvement on
that front over the past day or two. Not a huge deal, really.
The major annoyance for today is that I woke up with what I think is the
beginning of my first cold sore ever!! What?!? It hasn't broken at this
point, but it's just a swollen, tender spot right in the middle of my lower
lip that appeared overnight for no particular reason. I suppose it could be
the start of a big canker sore or maybe I bit my lip in my sleep, but it's
not at all familiar looking to me. As far as I know, I've not been in
contact with anyone who has/had a cold sore (though I did have book club
last night, so who knows?), but everything I'm reading online says the virus
can lie dormant for years and then can be brought on when your immune system
is weakened--or even from the hormones of pregnancy. Of course. Yet
another completely random pregnancy symptom I wouldn't have expected. So
I've spent the morning doing all sorts of home remedy stuff--not that I have
a clue what works--including some acidophilus (which I'm taking anyway along
with my antibiotics because it keeps me from getting a dreaded yeast
infection), tea tree oil, ice, and a tea bag compress (I have a tea bag
hanging out of my mouth as I type this, in fact--very attractive, as you
might imagine). I have a regular appointment at the doc's office today
anyway, so I'll ask about it when I'm there to see if there's anything else
I could be doing. Forgive me if this is too graphic, but I'd love to avoid
a big crusty mess on my lip if at all possible, since we have our
out-of-town shower with the entire family this Saturday. My suggestion box
is officially open, if anyone wants to chime in.
Finally, on to the good stuff: my baby shower this past Sunday was a lot of
fun. I had a mini-meltdown (the good kind) the night before because I was
just so overwhelmed by the fact that we've even reached this point at all.
Happily, my little pre-event cryfest prevented any major waterworks at the
actual shower--forgive the pun. We got lots of fun stuff for the baby,
including a swing, a bouncer, and probably my favorite item, a sling, along
with some cute little clothes and blankets and typical things like that.
Like I said, we have a big family shower coming up this weekend, so by the
end of it, I'm sure to feel completely spoiled, in addition to being worn
out from the 6-7 hours of car time traveling each direction--at least DH has
Monday off work because of the MLK holiday, so we have a couple of days to
rest between trips. I'll spend most of the weekend with my best friend from
high school working on sewing/building the crib bedding ensemble, which I
will be sure to send pics of as soon as we actually have the furniture
delivered and the room set up... that will be probably a month or so from
now, if I have to guess. Hope baby doesn't come super early!
Secondly, and even more exciting, one of my closest friends just got word on
Monday that she and her husband are leaving for Taiwan this coming Monday to
go and meet their baby boy!! He was born in early July, and they got their
referral back in mid-August, but have been waiting for all the paperwork and
court processing and what-not since then. They had gone more than six weeks
since the first official court date (there are apparently two rulings) with
no update whatsoever, so were convinced it would be late February or even
March before they would travel. Well, as it turns out, the folks on the
Taiwan end of things inadvertently neglected to update their agency as
things progressed, so they got the news of both rulings at the same time and
will be picking up their son a week from today!!! They'll be home on
February 1, and I couldn't be more excited for them than if I were meeting
my own baby in a week (not something I'm quite ready for, incidentally,
since we have some baking left to do). Please send lots of good travel and
happy baby vibes to the new family and pray for their safe arrival and
return.
Enough from me for one post. Sorry this has been so long, but thanks for
reading if you've made it this far. Again, any cold sore remedy suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. Hope you all are having a wonderful week!!

Wow!! You do have a lot going on GA!!! :0 First about the cold sore,
they have a lot of OTC remedys for that. I use Carmex and it does
help a lot. I dont get them very often at all though. My sister gets
them a lot and she said Carmex helps her a lot. Your shower sounds
fun sounds like your normal feeling all those feelings too (the
crying) i had that a lot in the last trimester. I would cry over
stupid stuff too. Sounds like you got a lot of nice stuff at your
shower too!! Wow you get two showers??? I did too. The girls at work
had one for me too and then family. I didn't have a lot of stuff
because i got rid of all of Alexis's stuff when i didnt think we were
going to have anymore kids. (lol) Congrats on your friend adopting
too how sweet!! (and exciting) Good luck on getting rid of
your cold sore and thanks for the update. You are next right???

Even with the gripes it sounds like things are going well and I am so
excited for your friend. What excitement getting to meet their litle one.
It's like a scheduled c-section.
Showers were always so much fun. With Rachel we had four. My ex's side of
the family, my side of the family, our church, and at my workplace. One of
them was scheduled the day she was born so we got to have it after birth
rather than before and my work shower was scheduled after she was born so
that was fun to pass her around while I opened presents. =-) I am glad that
you had such a blessed one and got so many nice things. The generosity of
those who love us is sometimes overwhelming.
I so love following each step with you all. Baby excitement never gets old.

Gabookworm,
I'm sorry about the coldsore. ouch. It's my understanding that the cold
sore virus is just another form of herpes, so you can take a prescribed
herpes medication that can wipe it out pretty quickly. I have herpes, and I
take Zovirax prophilactically, which keeps outbreaks from happening at all,
but you can also take it (or most other herpes medications) when you have an
outbreak, and it speeds up the healing time, and can often prevent the sore
from surfacing, breaking and scabbing over. Most herpes meds are category B,
meaning that in animal studies, they did not cause any problems or risks to
the fetus. In fact, my old old old OB also had herpes, and took medication
prophilactically for the last half of her pregnancy to keep her herpes
supressed so that she would not have an outbreak near delivery. I figured
if it was good enough for my OB's baby, it would be good enough for me. If
you and your doctor are comfortable with the med, and you can get a
prescription today, you can get a couple doses in before your party, and you
may well keep it from getting any worse.

Gabookworm,
One more thing regarding the cold sore...for me, I woudl always get an
outbreak after a big crying jag -- if I had a breakdown over something (even
if it was hormone related), within a few days, I'd always get a breakout.
They are often stress related, even good stress, so your pre-shower
breakdown may well have been the trigger.
Congrats to your friends on their upcoming trip and reuniting with their
son. Prayers and good wishes going their way. May they have easy travels
and no bumps in the road.

Hope things get better for you quick, gbw!
I've also had a cold sore in the same place twice in
the last week or so! Haven't really felt sick, just
a slight fever one day. One of the perks of having a
super immune system, these things don't last long, thank
goodness.
I also use carmex liberally on them, seems to help pretty
quickly. Hope yours clears up in plenty of time for your shower!

Hi GA,
When I was pregnant with DD, one of my old scars from when I was a kid
pussed up and re-opened... It's amazing that my body had been holding
something in check for so long, but with weakened immunity it came out. I
also got a bad chest infection and had to take 2 courses of antibiotics to
clear it up.
I am praying it isn't a coldsore. I'm very lucky I don't get them, I've
heard they can get worse during pregnancy. :0(
Hugs,
Jade.
(who hopes to join you here officially next month - fingers crossed...)

I hope you're feeling better, and that your shower is a blast. I'm glad
the first one was fun. Good luck getting the nursery ready! That's such fun!
Congrats to your friend. They must be thrilled to finally be bringing
their son home
