Benjamin is now 8 1/2 months old. He has decided that he doesn't like
his baby food anymore. Every time we feed him, he blows raspberries
with the spoon near his lips, or with a mouthful of food.

What can I feed him now? He only has his two bottom teeth. I have
tried (and he likes) yogurt, cheese, but isn't too sure of cottage
cheese.

I have been told to try a whole wheat pasta (cut up) with a little
butter. What else? Waffles, fish sticks? Any suggestions please!!! I
don't know what else to give him.

Thank you

Anything soft or slightly firm, but really anything. Scrambled eggs.
Cheerios (they can gum them). Canned green beans. Bananas. Avacado. Tiny
bits of whatever you are eating, including chicken or steak (really really
tiny), potatoe, fruit, etc. The list is endless. Basically just give him a
tiny bit sized piece of whatever you are eating, then he can gum it a bit
and swallow it, and not even need to chew (although he will practice). Open
a can of low sodium chicken soup or stew, and give him small bites out of
that -- it's all cooked soft during the canning process.

Don't think of him as toothless so you need to give him pureed/mashy food.
Think of his gums as chewing tools, and give him things that are chewable
but not sharp, like crackers. Although goldfish are okay because they are
small and tend to disolve/crunch easily. Does that make sense?

Pasta is a good finger food. Cook it til it's soft/mushy and cut it into
little pieces (all of my girls especially love cheese tortellini--I always
keep bags of tortellini in the freezer). Also offer him veggies like peas,
carrots, potato, sweet potato, broccoli, etc., cooked til soft and cut up,
and soft fruits like bananas, ripe cantelope, blueberries, etc. I also gave
my babies Cheerios, bits of meatballs, and cooked egg yolks at that age.

FWIW, one of my twins didn't have any teeth until after her first birthday,
and she ate table food like a champ well before that. They just gum their
food. Wink

This was one of those times I looked forward too with my littles. If you are
eating it, pretty much they can eat it, except for some meats. Vegetables in
finger-sized pieces, pasta in bite sizes (mini filled raviolies,
tortellinies are good too not just macaronies etc), meatballs cut up,
chicken cut up in small pieces and softened with your fork or the side of
your knife. Try it all and let him see what he likes. And don't think it all
has to be bland. My kids preferred foods with flavor, potatoes with butter
and salt, tortellini or macaroni with a non spicy meat sauce. So many people
think bland when they think little people but I found that not to be true at
all.

Have fun and enjoy learning what Benjamin loves to eat.

Jack never liked baby food either. I would give him whatever we were
having, cut up or mashed, or put in one of those mesh bags. He even ate
bagels from those bags, waffles would probably work too Wink

I totally agree!~ I always think of babies in exotic locations such as
China, Japan, Thailand, India, etc, and think about what they are fed. They
likely aren't being fed Gerber pureed baby food. They're being fed bits and
pieces of whatever their parents are eating, which would include raw fish,
soy sauce and other spicy sauces, curries, pad thai, etc. No bland stuff
there!

My general rule is as long as it's not over processed (ie out of a packet)
and it's not going to choke them (or cause allergic reaction) then feed it
to them. Both our started eating whatever we were eating but pureed to
start with, then mashed, then cut into cubes. Now they eat exactly what we
eat but I still cut their meat up Smile

Hi Kim!
It sounds like it's time for things to get messy... He will probably self
feed soft foods now. Soft boiled carrots (no larger than peas so he doesn't
choke), peas, broccoli, soft fingers of chicken breast (DD's favourite by 10
months), bread (crusty bits if he's never had any before from 8 months),
rusks, fruit, (apple in mesh or stewed), banana, etc., he might like banana
or avocado mushed up on a piece of thin multigrain or wholemeal bread cut
into strips, fingers of cheese, rice, the possibilities are endless.

In the meantime, try giving him his own spoon, and letting him poke it into
the bowl. He might want to try to spoon feed himself. I would keep spoon
feeding him while you build up his repertoire of fingerfoods, because all
that chewing is hard work, and he might get tired before he is full. Also it
might be hard for him to get it into his mouth consistently.

Hopefully giving him a spoon will distract him enough while you spoon it
into his mouth between his attempts. I found that DD was satisfied if she
had fingerfoods because I was letting her regain control of the feeding
process. She then let me spoon food into her mouth between her own efforts.
I started her off at lunch times, where she only got fingerfoods for lunch.
Later on I added some to dinner while she went through a resisting phase,
and while she learned to spoon feed.

He might also be protesting about the texture of food. Perhaps he wants it
more chunky, or perhaps it is too chunky, but he would eat fingerfoods
instead.
Whatever you give him, avoid sugar and salt and added fats and oils. He
doesn't need a sweet tooth, and his kidneys cant handle salt yet. You wont
need to add butter to the pasta, or bread for that matter, it tastes great
on it's own, and you don't want to start that habit either. He could also
handle mince, but not meatballs yet.
Good luck!
Jade.

Just curious: why not meatballs? They're just ground meat mixed with egg,
bread crumbs, parmesan, spices, and a few other things that babies can eat.
As long as they're cut up into tiny pieces, I don't see why babies at this
age shouldn't eat them. My girls ate meatballs, meatloaf (I make my meatloaf
similar to my meatballs), and other ground meat dishes as babies.

I meant whole.... Of course they can eat them, but even halved, they require
caution. But if you made them small and cut them in quarters, it would be
fine... sounds like too much work for me though!

Kim,
I admire the fact that you are trying to raise your child in a healthier way
than you were raised, and to not have some of the same issues that you have.
I do that as well, only my issues are more related to anxiety over dentists.

So with that in mind, I want to point out that while not wanting your son to
develop a sweet tooth like you have, you have to realize that you are still
feeding him something sweet for desert. Even though it is a natural fruit
sweet, you are still training him to have sweet after each meal. When you
are trained to end each meal with a sweet thing, the meal doesn't feel
complete until you eat that sweet thing. If you don't get it, you crave it,
and you'll end up eating more of other things in the effort to try to fill
that "sweets" hole. I know you know what I'm talking about. He is still
very young at thispoint, but I'd work really hard to change your thinking in
regards to desert, and instead feed him the fruit during the meal, between
bites, rather than at the end, as a "desert." Let him learn that a meal is
a meal, and stands on it's own, and doesn't need a sugary end cap to be
complete. Then, later on, if he eats desert sometimes, it will be yummy and
good, but if he doesn't, he won't feel like he's missing something.

Now, some sweet tooth issues may well be inherited/genetic, rather than
taught, but you can teach him to love natural fruit sweet things, and teach
him that not every meal needs to be followed by sweets. I think rather than
trying to avoid a sweet tooth, you're better avoiding teaching him that all
meals need to be followed by desert.

Good luck!

As I can't stand the texture of tofu and don't eat it myself except in rare
occasions I never offered it to my kidlets. They were raised on exactly the
same foods etcetera and are completely different eaters. It's amazing how
unique thier tastes are, not just their tastes but when they like to eat
(Rachel will eat any time of the day or night, Ian rarely eats a full supper
and doesn't snack in the evening.) I think, like each of us, our kidlets are
only partially what we teach by example in foods, and part their natural
taste preferences.

We do the best we can with good examples and hope they follow it as they
grow.

I'm too much like my father when it comes to food, but I think the grounding
my mother gave me serves me well to curb my bad tendencies. So I think it
can be a good weapon against bad eating habits. I think I would be twice as
fat if I'd been brought up without a clue on how to eat well, or with a
limited range of foods. How can you lose weight if you hate veges or salads?
It's really hard to eat just a little of the naughty foods, but much easier
to eat a lot of the healthier foods and feel full.

I don't eat tofu, not normally, but will eat marinated tofu when I'm out.
I'm quite adventurous. DD loves Asian foods, and I try to pull myself out of
a rut every now and then and learn a couple more recipes :0)

I don't give her any juice, and try to drink water myself. If I need a treat
soda water is just as pleasant (if not more so) than lemonade. I don't like
soft drinks that much lately. I think they are too sweet. I think it's
because I rarely eat lollies anymore. They don't appeal to me either.
Strange! But I think it's fairly unfair for DD to see me eating something
and not give her a taste. So I have just fallen out of the habit. I still
like chocolate though, especially white, which is decidedly sweet.

Everyone deserves a vice or two.
:0)
Jade.
