A friend of mine is a mother of two daughters (ages 4 & 6) who are in
need of speech therapy. I would like to know if there are any books
out there that you can recommend that would be specially suited for my
friend to obtain for reading to her daughters -- or books that these
girls can read themselves that will help them with reading
comprehension. My understanding is that these girls haven't really
been exposed to enough reading, or being read to, and that appears to
be the problem.

Any book recommendations that will interest kids at the 4-6 age range,
which will help them in speech and reading comprehension at the same
time would be greatly appreciated.

Withouot understanding exactly what problems these girls have with
speaking, it would be impossible to make specific recommendations. Even
then, reading is not the best treatment for speech problems. Working with a
speech therapist is.

Any book that the girls will enjoy will enhance their reading and
comprehension.

If she's in the US, speech evaluations and services are available through
the local school system at no cost to the family if the children qualify as
being "delayed enough". Services start at age 3 so both girls would be able
to receive services if they qualify. The therapists they are assigned to
(probalby not the same one since the older girl is probably in elementary
school and would see the school's speech therapist while the younger would
see a preschool therapist) can give good recommendations on reading
materials to help them develop their speech. From what I recall, there are
guides that tell you specific children's books that work on particular
speech sounds, either beginning (alliterative) or ending (rhyming) sounds.
I remember my kids' therapists giving us handouts listing specific books but
I don't know what book they were taken from. Most of those professional
level books are *very* expensive, over $100.

Oh, and I forgot about a catalog I receive called Super Duper Publications
that has fun educational materials. My son's speech therapist loaned it to
me and I ordered some games and flash cards from it. Their website is
www.superduperinc.com.

Depending on the system the local schools have, it might be the same one -- if
my son had needed speech therapy in preschool, he would have seen the same
woman who did his evaluation at Children's Hospital, and he would almost
certainly have seen her on the days when she came to his older sisters'
elementary school.

I think it is a good idea to read to them A LOT, anything they like and will
sit still for, to enrich their general language skills, as well as whatever
*specific* kinds of drills the therapist may recommend.

Books by Robert Munsch are very humorous and wonderful to
read aloud to kids aged about 3 to 5 years old. Lots of
fun.

Why are they not getting it? You are posting from the United States and if
these children are in need of speech therapy, their school district should
evaluate them and provide the therapy at no cost to the family.

Many teachers feel that any reading is better than no reading at all.
Magazines, etc.
