are Nike and Reebok getting their act together re sweatshop reform?
Any ratings on brands' relative level of 'corporate social
responsibility'?
I would imagine what with bad publicity in the the 90's that Nike and
Reebok have to be better than the anonymous store brands like Skechers
and Payless that have no visibility re factories? Am I dreaming?

There is this neat site called "Google." www.google.com. Search there.

Nike has the Nike Code of Conduct, which is fairly thorough. They will
(and have) cut off suppliers for serious violations.
And it can be said "Nike has more union members than Wal-Mart."
Reebok also has extensive CSR activities.

I'd say with CSR, your particular concern may not align with that of
the self-proclaimed raters. Some of them have their particular method
that they insist everyone use (as, back when South Africa had
apartheid, they wanted everyone to adopt the Sullivan Principles).
It's like the various flavors of politically correct investing:
Most agree "no alcohol, no tobacco"
Some object to certain pharma companies
Some object to defense contractors
Some object to nuclear power

Skechers and Payless anonymous? You're not anonymous when you're
filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Skechers CSR policy: "We require our manufacturers to certify that
neither convict, forced, indentured labor (as defined under U.S. law)
nor child labor (as defined by the manufacturer’s country) is used in
the production process, that compensation will be paid according to
local law and that the factory is in compliance with local safety
regulations."
Payless: "They must also agree to our production control processes and
certify that neither they nor their suppliers use forced or child
labor."
>Am I dreaming?
The data's out there as to what they're doing.

Someone posted this link last week and I'm not sure how valid it is, but I
suppose a guideline of some sort?
http://www.responsibleshopper.org/
Didn't cause too much of a stir in here so you be the judge...

To which I'll say "their concerns may not line up with your concerns."
Some stuff they objected to is of no concern to me, and in some cases
they left out what I would have considered the most egregious
problems.

They had somebody point out that one of the firms they rated highly
made contributions to an organization that favored getting rid of the
nation of Israel.

I suppose the best guideline would be to 'Buy American' or in Canada, 'Buy
Canadian' but that of course would be dreaming. Unfortunately, it used to be
that way but those days are gone. Heck, at one time even home electronics
were part of North American manufacturing...

They are all the same. Nikes are made alongside Skechers and New
Balance and Adidas. They are all made in a handful of factories.
Just buy what you like. |

In the end, that's what most of us do. Buy what we like, buy what we can
afford but don't buy what you'd like to afford

Once you get beyond a certain size, TV sets are cheaper to make here
than in the Far East.
