I read the post about missing your doc, and I feel that way about you
all sometimes! It just seems like it gets harder and harder to check
in here...............
Anyhow, Lily is now 5 months (!), and we are getting ready for the
whole starting solids thing. Any advice? She is so cute, and has
learned to roll over at least every now and again! We took her to
Florida and put her feet in the water and sand (my mom lives on the
coast), and she had a blast when the "wave" (really very shallow pool
tide water) came in and got her feet wet.
Gotta run, but wanted to just say "hi".

Good to see you, YG! Lily sounds like such a doll.
As for the solids, we just started slowly, with the cereals, then added in
one veggie/fruit at a time (while keeping an eye out for allergies, etc.).
Follow her lead. She may not be into solids much at first. Just keep
offering. Pretty soon, you'll get into a groove and will be feeding three
solid meals a day.
Have fun!

so good to hear from you. for the solids i did the following
rice cereal (1 Tblspn) for 4 days
oatmeal (1 Tblspn) for 4 days
oatmeal (1/4 c) from then on
once on the 1/4 c of oatmeal i started the fruits and veggies. it was
recommended to me and i couldn't agree more with this advice (hind
sight) start the veggies first-the fruits are naturally sweeter and
they wouldn't like going from fruits to veggies. you should try each
fruit/veggie for 3-5 days before moving on to a new one (to make sure
there is no alllergy). my pediatrician recommended doing the new food
item early in the day (breakfast or lunch) so that you have more of a
watchful eye on them in case of an allergy vs. dinner time and putting
them to bed. when i started the fruits/veggies i would do them for
lunch. i would do the 1/4 cup of cereal in the morning and then at
lunch time do the fruit/veggie. i hope this helps. |

Thanks guys!
We started her first bite of the rice cereal last night. Not too sure
what to make of it! Got some priceless pics of her looking rather
suspiciously at the spoon.
Meanwhile, I'm still pumping like a fiend. (the breastfeeding thing we
had major issues with though I haven't given it up completely)

The key to remember here for the first month or more, is that solids are
something to play with and explore, and not a major (or even minor) source
of nutrition at this point! Enjoy, and have fun with it!

Hi YG,
Advice? Don't start too young (6 months seems to be the recommended age),
progress her as quickly as she wants, but be on the look out for allergies
(new food every 3 days seems to be recommended), be prepared for mess, and
let her feed herself as much as she wants (let her have her own spoon). Get
her used to drinking water at every meal time. RELAX! Enjoy it, oh and take
lots of photos! Remember, the first 12 months is more about learning to eat,
than an absolute nutritional necessity. You'll both be fine.
Fantastic about the beach! What fun! We haven't put DD's toes in yet, but
will do before summer is over. :0)
Hope you are all well,
Jade.
