Saw Juno tonight and couldn't help but wonder how it would be received
by alt.a's regulars if we could play it here.
Great characters, great performances by Ellen Page and the supporting
cast. Great dialogue and music, too. It seemed to work on all levels
for the audience, based on the applause that came with the credits.
Was it real? I think it had its moments, at least from my side of the
fence. I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts.

PS For some reason, I was the only one in the theater that laughed
when Juno's gal friend referred to the kid-to-be as "your little
bastard."

Yeah, I'd like to know as well. I saw the shorts at the movies last
night and thought it looked promising, but wondered about the outcome.

Sorry, the answer to that question would be a spoiler for those who
intend to see the movie.
I'll reply privately to you both.

Some determined googling would supply the answer. (It's on wikipedia.)
I'm thinking about seeing it, even though I read the plot.
While googling, I found an interesting article by an anti-abortionist,
who suggests that the whole film is friendly to their position. I'd be
interested in your take on it... the writer of that article makes it
clear the abortion is the touchstone by which she evaluates things, so
her opinion may have been colored by that.

Excerpt:
"I have to jump to my favorite part of the movie, which pro-aborts
will hate most, when Juno decides to "procure a hasty abortion."
"The pro-life protester greeting Juno at the mill is a nerd but
friendly. She and Juno engage in a civil conversation, and she
ultimately gets the job done by calling out to Juno, "Your baby has
fingernails!" as the teen determinedly proceeds into the mill. This
little humanizing point grabs Juno, causing her to change her mind and
ditch the abortion.
"Diablo's portrayal of the abortion mill and workers is hysterical.
The uncaring receptionist's face is laden with piercings. She
uncouthly tells Juno to list "every score and every sore" after
offering her a fruit-flavored condom. The place is cold.
"Here are more facets of "Juno" pro-aborts will hate.
"Juno is hurt when Bleeker agrees with her to "nip it in the bud," or
abort. Abortion is not a wonderful "right." It is borne of tragedy and
pain and feeling trapped and alone." |

The abortion clinic scene is described accurately, more or less,
though I reacted to it differently. Both the clinic and the protestor
were caricatures: the clinic filled with hand-wringing women and
clerical automatons, the protestor standing alone outside the clinic
mouthing platitudes. Abortion is one of the three options available
to a pregnant teen. Juno considers them all, rejecting motherhood
and abortion and finding prospective adoptive parents in the back
pages of her free weekly advertising newspaper. It came across to me
as an exercise of choice on Juno's part rather than a condemnation of
abortion generally, but then the movie is a romantic comedy that puts
a spin on everything it touches, be it the PAPs, Juno's parents, her
boyfriend, his mother, or anyone else that crosses the screen.
