Excerpt:
For a lot of kids, reading is not magical. It's really hard work. I
got that from being a teacher too -- I saw what a struggle that is for
a lot of kids, say, in second grade, which I taught the longest. And
it's just an incredibly difficult process when you think about it.
When you go back to see what it takes to learn the letter, the sound
of the letter, the syllable that becomes words that becomes sentences.
It's like, "Wow, that's overwhelming!" When you break it down into
pieces you just think, "Nobody should be able to read. It's just too
hard."
