OK, so I've finally gotten serious about tackling the huge job that is our
basement lately--TONS of boxes (I'm a packrat), and even more than there
would be because my father was kind enough to bring up a bunch he had in his
attic and basement from my growing-up years--he was too afraid to throw any
of it away himself. Anyway, as I've mentioned before, DH and my dad are
going to finish out the basement starting at the end of this month so we can
move the office down there, have a little playroom and extra guest space,
plus a dedicated storage area and a proper laundry room... basically,
besides the laundry area, the whole thing is one big disorganized storage
bin/junk room right now.

So I've spent lots of time trying to go through these boxes and dividing
them (a la the tv show "Clean Sweep") into keep, sell, and trash piles. The
good news is that the majority has been fairly easy to trash thus far, and
I'm having a much easier time making these decisions than I thought my
packrat tendencies would allow. The bad news is that because some of this
stuff is so old, I've riled up a lot of dust and goodness-knows-what-else in
the process, and I think I've gone and given myself a sinus infection or
something because I'm coughing and hacking like crazy, have a dull, but
persistent headache behind my eyes, have no appetite (a huge shift from the
past few weeks of what feels like constant eating), and am just generally
super tired. I ended up taking a 2 1/2-hour nap late yesterday
afternoon/evening, and then I woke up for a couple of hours to eat, park
myself on the sofa for a little tv, and then back to bed again. Baby has
been super lethargic and not moving much, which makes me feel a little sad.
There is enough movement every now and then to reassure me, and I was able
to listen to the HB with the doppler yesterday when I had a major panic
attack after I first woke up and didn't feel the usual morning kicks and
such. Obviously, I much prefer my happy, bouncy baby who comes out to play
on most days when I'm feeling well, but I understand it's normal for baby to
slow down a bit when my body has to use some extra energy to make me well,
especially when I'm having to remind myself to eat because hunger just isn't
there right now.

I'm trying to drink a lot of water and OJ to help move this stuff through my
system, and I think I'm going to just rest and load up on tea and honey
today (plus as much food as I can stomach, of course), as I'd really like to
avoid taking any more meds than I've already had while pg if I can avoid it.
Does anyone have suggestions for safe home remedy options for sinus/allergy
stuff--beyond wearing a mask next time I'm in the basement??

Thanks for any suggestions and get well vibes you can send my way,
gabookworm

You might try taking a good hot shower after you work in the basement, and
rinse your nose/sinuses really well. Have you heard of a neti pot? It's a
teapot like thing that you use to pour warm salt water into one nostril
while tilting your head, and it goes up through your sinuses and comes out
the other nostril. It sounds strange, but doesn't hurt at all. And, it
would wash the dust right out. It might be worth finding one online and
ordering it. In the meantime, you can try just the hot shower, and even
just rinsing out the nostril area really well.

It sounds like you're committed to getting this done, which is great,
but you're in the homestretch now, and you're going to get tired, and be
more sensitive to things. Wear a mask, and like Jamie said, try to
steam/rinse your sinuses after work down there, but TAKE IT EASY, GIRL!
Enjoy these last few weeks. When do we get to start guessing the gender?

OK, so I finally caved and had to call the doc's office this morning after
finally going to the drug store to get some over the counter meds last
night, since my sinus stuff has gotten progressively worse--hacking cough,
chest congestion, runny nose, sore throat/postnasal drip, headache, etc.
They wouldn't call in antibiotics because they were convinced it was just
allergy-related, even though I could tell it was moving into my ears and
would probably be a full-blown infection soon, if not already. I tried to
convince them to just write me a prescription with the promise that I
wouldn't fill it unless I started feeling a lot worse over the weekend (I
have a baby shower on Sunday, so I felt a little nervous about not having
the meds available if I needed them), but no dice, they wouldn't do it...
even though my doc and nurse-midwife both know me personally and know I
never ask for meds unless it's really necessary. So they told me to just
keep doing the Robitussin/Tylenol regimen I started last night, and if I got
a fever over the weekend, then I could go to an urgent care clinic and let
them give me something. Well, I was a little annoyed by this because I KNOW
my body, and I know what my beginning stages of a sinus infection look/feel
like, but I also appreciate the fact that they don't prescribe antibiotics
at the drop of a hat--part of the reason I chose this practice in the first
place--so it was sort of a double-edged sword, you know?

So I spent most of today in bed, trying to stay hydrated, etc., and what do
I discover when my husband comes home from work and wakes me?? Of course, I
have a 101-degree fever--and worse, my doc's office closes at 1:30 on
Fridays, so no one is around to call the drugstore for me. Well, first
things first, I took some Tylenol and got the fever to come down. Then,
thankfully, I was able to have my nurse-midwife paged, rather than having to
pay the steep co-pay for the urgent care clinic (that would have been really
annoying), and she called in a prescription for antibiotics for me. Here's
hoping it does the trick and works its magic in time for Sunday's shower so
I don't have to be miserable. This is my first of two showers--one here in
town with friends, and one out of town next weekend with mine and DH's
families--and I really want to feel well enough to enjoy the day. Please
think good, healthy thoughts for me this weekend, 'cause I need all the help
I can get! For now, I'm off to bed again, so I hope you all have a great
weekend.

I am so sorry it has gone to an infection. Sinusitis is so common in
pregnancy and it always seemed to make me so much more prone to green goo
and gross stuff.

I am sure your antibiotics will kick right in and you will be feeling right
as rain by Sunday's shower. Have fun and bask in the excitement of the day.
