High Levels of Lead Found in Plastic Baby Products

A New York Times article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/11/business/11toy.html

from February 11 details an investigation into plastic baby products
that contain unhealthy levels of lead. Products identified include:

- a vinyl cooler for stored breast milk with high levels of lead from
a "Pump in Style" breast pump made by Medela;
- a carrying case that came with a First Years "Natural Transitions"
breast pump made by RC2 Brands;
- a Playtex "Fridge to Go" vinyl baby bottle cooler;
- an NFL licensed Oakland Raiders baby bottle cooler;
- a vinyl Skip Hop, Inc. "Pacifier Pocket" carrying case.

Laboratory testing was performed by The Center for Environmental
Health on products purchased in California from Target and BabiesRUs
stores.

As a result, the Center for Environmental Health is recommending that
parents discard the vinyl coolers and vinyl cases used for storing
breast milk, pacifiers, or other infant products. Vinyl is a "poison
plastic" that is often made with lead, a neurotoxin that can cause
learning disorders, brain and nerve damage, hearing problems, stunted
growth, and digestive problems. Scientists are increasingly concerned
that even small exposures to lead can cause problems, especially in
young children.

In response, a Class Action Suit is being prepared to recover damages
from these manufacturers and to force them to abandon the use of
materials that contain lead, from product offerings that come into
contact with children.

I am an investigator working for attorneys who are preparing the Class
Action Suit against Playtex Products, Inc., RC2 Brands, Inc., Skip Hop
and Medela, Inc. I am seeking parents who purchased any of the above
named products and who might be interested in participating in the
suit as a representative plaintiff.

The representative plaintiffs represent all members of the class, in
the class action suit. Usually, triple damages are requested and if
the case is won, will be awarded to all members of the class who can
be identified.

The representative plaintiffs are a necessity in order to bring the
case to trial. Besides the awarded damages, which all class members
are entitled to receive, the representative plaintiffs are normally
awarded an additional compensation for stepping forward and helping
bring the bad guys to justice. In previous cases I have worked, this
compensation has ranged between $1,000 and $10,000, depending on the
size of the total recovery. This is not guaranteed, but the attorneys
always ask for this compensation (and so far have always had this
request granted) in order to motivate plaintiffs to stand up in future
cases.

There is absolutely no cost to the representative plaintiff and total
time involved talking to the attorney and reviewing the complaint is
15 to 30 minutes on average.
