Please give me just a minute of your time. I do not want to intrude on
your Newsgroup. I, and another Grandma, have been working very hard
for the last several years to get the Florida legislature to pass the
Infant Eye Care Bill (HB1055). The Bill mandates an infant eye dilation
exam before babies leave the hospital; and at the 6-8 week and 6-9
month well-baby exams. It is a simple test that would cost 10¢ and
take 10 seconds of the doctors time to accomplish.
We have been fighting for 4 years to get this bill instituted against
what we believe to be the legislative influence of lobbyists with a lot
more money and resources than we have. Comprehensive details about the
bill may be found here:
http://www.kidsplea.org/joey.html
I need the your help to spread the word about this very important
legislation. Could you pass this on to others and let them know about
it? Would you consider filling out the Contact Legislators form on
that website? MOST importantly, we need people in the state of Florida
who would be willing to print out a hand full of our Flyers and paste
them on bulletin boards and public places. I am hoping that you will
help, because we need it ASAP.
Thank you for allowing me to interrupt your newsgroup.
Take Care, Sharon Lane

Beautiful little boy. To bad his grandma can't talk to him anymore! I
hope none of your children get this disease, then you will know how
very important this simple screening was.

Per the FAQ please do not post any more information about this to
alt.infertility.parenting. Also, it is improper to cross-post to
unrelated newsgroups such as the bass fishing group.
best of luck to you in your endeavor,

Just wondering!

I don't think the dilations themselves are ridiculous. Obviously an
exam that can help a child is not a bad thing. It's the idea of having
it mandated, which implies that in at least some cases it will be
against the will of the parents. I believe that it should be
encouraged, recommended, but not mandated. Like the antibiotic drops
that they put in newborn eyes: parents are able to say no if they want
to. I'm suspicious of "mandates," not the procedure itself.

Someone asked that question on misc.kids.pregnancy, whether the exam would
be mandated, or just that the doctors would be mandated to offer it. She
said that the doctors would be mandated to offer it.
It is sad what happened to that boy. Our pediatrician told us to look at
photos of our babies with red eye, and make sure that they looked even and
symmetrical. So although he didn't perform the test, it seems he was aware
of the issue, and asking us to keep an eye out for it, so to speak. Of
course once I saw the website for that little boy, I went back through all
my digital photos for Addie to make sure that I saw that she clearly had two
nice round red eyes in any of her photos. She did. Phew.

They are trying to mandate to have physicians offer several life saving
tests that cost pennies.
Things that they don't bother to offer or tell parents about.

Ahh, thank you, Jamie, that makes more sense to me that the doctors
will be mandated to offer it. Heck, in that case, I don't view it as
ridiculous. I hope it passes.
